Having hiked Machu Picchu, ‘Amtraked’ the USA, basked in the beauty of Bali, dived the Barrier Reef and taxied my way through Iran (not necessarily in that order), I feel I’m no stranger to the inherent variety on this immense planet of ours.
Africa, however, is one continent I’ve yet to set foot on and, after ten years of globetrotting, it has become the holy grail on my destination ‘to do’ list.
It is where humans originated almost a quarter of a million years ago. It has a unique wildlife and ecosystem. It is vast almost beyond comprehension.
I’ve had the chance to visit the likes of Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco but this isn’t the Africa that really intrigues me.
I grew up being mesmerised by the animals in the Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan movies. I have since developed a love for hiking, adventure and a strange yet undeniable fixation with great white sharks.
The chance to explore South Africa with National Geographic would be a dream come true and one that I hope is realised.
I think it would be arrogant of me to say that I deserve to win this trip, as there are no doubt countless other people who would relish this experience also.
But if you’re looking for someone with a passion for travel, adventure and a genuine but unfulfilled desire to live the South African dream, then I believe I could well be the person you’re looking for.
