Spain is the most popular summer holiday location for Brits – but where else will we be holidaying this year? A new survey reveals all.

Europeans travelling by plane choose Spain as their favourite summer destination, according to findings by Mondial Assistance.

For 25% of planned flights, Spain is the favourite destination, followed by Italy with 14%, the UK with 13%, France at 9%, Ireland with 5% and Portugal with 4%. Although France remains the leading tourist destination in the world, it only appears among the top 3 preferred destinations for the French, the Portuguese, the Swiss and the British.

The survey found that the French prefer France and Southern Europe: the first three leading destinations from France are France, Spain and Italy. The Germans will sunbathe in Southern Europe too, with Spain and Italy coming out tops – although 9% will fly to the U.K.

Convinced Spanish lovers, around 32% of British holidaynmakers will fly to Spain, 14% will remain in the UK and 10% will spend their holidays in France.

The Italians love their country, with the majority visiting a part of Italy by plane, although Spain attracts 23% of vacationing Italians, and 15% will spend their holidays in the UK.

The Spanish are also champions at staying-at-home, with more than one third of all Spanish vacationers remaining in Spain, with 17% travelling to the UK and 14% to Italy.

The Irish also love Spain, as well as Poland and the United States; while the Dutch will visit Spain, Italy and the UK.

Europeans who will travel by plane this summer will leave for an average of ten days, although the lucky Polish, French, Dutch, Germans and Irish leave for a bit longer. However, the unlucky Swedes, British, Portuguese and Spanish get less time off.

Thanks for providing this. The summer travel season is well here. With increasing air travel and somewhat lower fuel costs, many are choosing to drive this year. Many of those drivers will even opt for a rental car in order to save wear on their personal automobiles. And while it is also the season to see increased car rental rates, there are many approaches to reduce those costs. If you need help paying for your rental car, get a short term loan.
