The BT Global Challenge Race 2000 raced against the prevailing winds & currents, & was billed as the Worlds Toughest Yacht Race, & indeed all the other round the world yacht races travel the other way round the world - West to East.

In 2000 there were 12 new 72 Foot identical steel yachts. The race took 10 months to complete the circumnavigation.

The video contains the best ( or worst, depending on your viewpoint) of the sailing as the 12 yachts battle round the world.

The footage was filmed by the Crew onboard the yachts, and was made available for all to see & use, to show the nature of the race.

In addition the crew are all volunteers & indeed 75% of the crew had never sailed before signing up for the race.

Unfortunately the Challenge Business went in to Administration in 2006 so there will be no further races.

This is the collection of all the rough weather video form all 12 yachts. There are plenty of times when the sun is out, the sky is blue, but on a sailing yacht in a race this is generally bad, as you don't go very fast.

Heavy weather is exactly what the boats were made for, & what most of the crew want too, for a short while anyway.

Actually I love weather like that.

You have to have trust in the boat, but being made of steel & designed for the Southern Ocean they are like Paris-Dakar Rally Cars, incredibly Strong & Durable.

WOW !

I like the video, but I am not sure I want to sail in conditions like those.

Good effort!
